Stuff I consumed, pondered, and in extreme cases acted upon.
Psychology 🔗
What the movies of David Lynch reveal about our minds:
We find that when participants experience that WTF sensation, and can’t figure out what is going on, they are prompted to find other ways to regain a sense of meaning.
Katharine Hayhoe argues that it’s time for climate scientists to ditch the myth of neutrality in the climate crisis:
But then when that science interacts with societal well-being, that is the point on the spectrum at which discussions of our values and our biases, I think become so essential, so valuable, and the need to articulate those and be transparent about those is so important.
Design 🔗
When empathy is not enough in design:
There is clearly an issue here of who is getting to save time and effort at doing what. There are plenty of people burdened by tasks that could be facilitated by designed products and services. Invariably, these are precisely the people who cannot afford those designs. So instead, these designs are aiding people who then redirect their saved time and effort into working more, rather than humanitarian or avocational or leisure activities.
Nature 🔗
Naturally occurring fission reactors do exist, but are rare:
Since 1982, five new reactor zones have been discovered in these deposits and studied since 1989 in a cooperative European program. New geological, mineralogical, and geochemical studies have been carried out in order to understand the behavior of the actinides and fission products which have been stored in a geological environment for more than 2.0 Ga years.
How to plant a Celtic Rainforest:
More than 100 volunteers of all ages devoted hundreds of hours to planting the trees on the 30-hectare (75-acre) site of what were sheep-grazed fields. Eventually the landscape will have 70% tree cover, with the rest becoming open glades, woodland rides and wildflower-rich meadows.
Listening 🔗
I am enjoying the “retro Poland covers” of maromaro. It’s a sign of a good cover when it brings forth elements you’ve forgotten, or missed in the original.
